What is Passive Joint Mobilisation ?
If there has been resistance, injury, or lack of mobility in a joint from conditions like osteoarthritis, you can lose confidence in your flexibility, PJM can help you regain that confidence. In exploring the range of movement a client has in a joint, it can increase their body awareness. The client can relax and enjoy being moved passively on the table as Claire offers body education. The goal is to get the joint to move normally and with less pain. The gentle movements help lubricate the surfaces of the joint. Muscles around the joint relax, and pain is eased. This helps regain normal movement in your joint.
Once a sense of comfort and relaxation is established through the massage more focus is given to working with the client and exploring the range of movement within the joints. Fixated joints can be painful and they create tension in nearby muscles. PJM helps to release these compressed joints and relax the surrounding muscles. This is done by administering gentle shaking, vibration, stretching and mobilisation techniques in a smooth, rhythmic fashion. This gives information to the practitioner about the clients body and can help shape a massage which is challenging, interesting, and unique to both client & practitioner.
